Vilsack’s Big Shoes

Mandate author, Jim Harkness offers solutions to the many problems facing incoming Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, this past Saturday in the Des Moines Register.

Our food system is on a dangerous roller-coaster ride, and unless someone hits the brakes, we will fly off the tracks. The system is affected by everything from food recalls to increasing water pollution to the boom/bust price cycle, which throws our farm economy into chaos.

As former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack takes the helm at the Department of Agriculture, he should step back and learn from the remarkable reforms made by the last Iowan to serve as head of the USDA, Henry Wallace.
